ezBookkeeping

Track everyday spending on phone and computer, with charts showing where money goes.

What it does

ezBookkeeping is a personal money diary. Record what you spend and earn in a few taps, sort it into accounts, categories and tags, and see clear charts of where your money goes. It imports bank statements (CSV, Excel, OFX, QIF and more), handles several currencies, and works on your phone like an app. It is light enough for a Raspberry Pi, and optional AI can turn a receipt photo or a typed sentence into a transaction.

  • Quick entry on phone and desktop, installable like an app
  • Clear charts, calendars and custom insights of where money goes
  • Imports bank files (CSV, Excel, OFX, QIF, GnuCash, Firefly III and more)
  • Optional AI for receipt photos, plus MCP for your own AI assistant

Great for: Individuals and households who want a simple, private spending diary that works on both phone and computer.

  • Online with Railway about $5/month, usage-basedA general-purpose host that can run any of these apps, including your own customised version. Usage-based pricing with a free trial. Third-party host.
  • On my own computerFreeYour AI installs what it needs and explains each step. It works while your computer is on.

Hosts are independent companies, not BespokeAI. You sign up and pay them directly. We may earn a referral fee, which never changes your price.

How people are using this project

Examples of what people ask their AI to do with ezBookkeeping. Start from one, or just tell your AI and it will ask what you'd like.

Can I trust it?

  • MIT. Very permissive. You can use, change and share it, even commercially, as long as you keep the copyright notice. No obligation to publish your changes.
  • Your data: stores personal data, on your own device or server. Accounts and transactions in SQLite at /ezbookkeeping/data/ezbookkeeping.db (or MySQL/PostgreSQL); receipt pictures and avatars in /ezbookkeeping/storage; settings in /ezbookkeeping/conf/ezbookkeeping.ini or EBK_ variables.
  • Other services: AI model provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, OpenRouter, Ollama, LM Studio or compatible) (optional, pay-per-use with your own key, or free with Ollama / LM Studio); Exchange-rate sources (European Central Bank by default, and others) (optional, free); Map tiles (OpenStreetMap by default, others configurable) (optional, free); Email (SMTP) (optional, free with most providers); OIDC login provider (optional, free (self-hosted) or varies)
  • Pinned version 3dcc316. Every handover uses exactly this code, which we've reviewed.
  • Set EBK_SECURITY_SECRET_KEY before the first run, turn off sign-up (EBK_USER_ENABLE_REGISTER=false) once your accounts exist, and turn on two-factor login.
  • Use HTTPS through a reverse proxy before reaching it from outside your home. Financial data is sensitive.
  • AI recognition sends the receipt photo or text to the provider you configure. Use Ollama or LM Studio to keep it local.
  • The MCP server and API tokens give an AI or script full access to your books. Limit MCP to trusted IPs (mcp_allowed_remote_ips) and keep tokens secret.
